What is PPV in Supply Chains and Manufacturing?

purchase price variance meaning

One of the primary reasons for tracking PPV is to maintain tight control over purchasing expenses. With the use of specialized software, companies can automate procurement workflows by setting up steps and specific users that will be responsible for each stage. Make sure employees of all relevant departments are aware of the procurement workflow, and have a system that keeps them up to date with their documents.

Both positive and negative variances arise from various factors, each influencing procurement planning in your company. PPV is an important metric for supply chains to use because it provides a much-needed measurement for your procurement activities. Analysing your business’s PPV allows you to see where you are losing money or missing opportunities to increase your profits.

It also pays off to estimate for the best and the worst possible scenarios so that businesses can be prepared for anything. Negative variance means financial savings, but it would be a somewhat simplistic approach to assess performance based on PPV alone. In addition, you’ll learn how best to identify, measure, and communicate those savings to your organization.

By identifying variances in purchase prices, companies quickly spot inefficiencies or unexpected cost increases. This enables procurement teams to take corrective actions, such as negotiating better terms or seeking alternative suppliers, to bring costs back in line with expectations. Purchase price variance, also known as PPV, is used in supply chain procurement to show the difference between the standard price of a purchased item and wave accounting reviews the actual price of that item.

How is PPV calculated?

The sooner the purchasing team identifies a significant variance, the quicker they can take corrective action. Some variation depends on the decisions made by finance, procurement, or management teams, while PPV can also vary due to external circumstances out of staff’s control.
